Laboratory scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) trial

Aqua Enviro use two main techniques for assessing feedstocks for treatment via UASB technology:

  • Bio-chemical Methane Potential (BMP) test and
  • Laboratory scale trials using bench-scale UASB reactors.

We recommend laboratory scale UASB trials are used as the 2nd stage of assessment to assess the amenability of the feedstock for treatment using UASB technology following BMP testing. UASB trials consist of Bench scale reactors operated at conditions tailored to the specific project requirements.

Examples of what may be assessed using laboratory scale UASB trials:-

  • UASB stability
  • Effect of feedstock pre-treatment
  • Effluent characteristics
  • Methane yield obtainable from the feed stock
  • Seeding and/or feeding strategies
  • Gas composition / trace contaminants
  • Nutrient requirement
  • Process optimisation
  • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) destruction
  • Ramp up regime
  • Accumulation of inhibitory substances

UASB reactors are typically suited to dilute waste water streams (3% TSS with particle size >0.75mm).
